"Walking Beside Lions" 14" x 14"

-As I created this piece I was listening to The Horse and His Boy on audiobook (the 3rd Narnia book) and it was such a peaceful and wonder filled experience. I cannot believe I had never heard this one before because I think it’s one of the best!!

I also could not get this burnt orange color out of my head and I am so pleased with how it came out on the raw canvas. To me, orange is the color of ferocity and splendor and magnificence and glory. The color of lions and the sun and warmth. The color we think of when we think of joy and happiness. There is power in the color orange. The color of Aslan in Narnia and the color of newness and fall. The color of some of the most spectacular sunsets we ever see. The color of dying to oneself to flourish.

When I look at this piece all I can see is Narnia, and Aslan walking beside the main character Shasta, which is one of the most powerful descriptions I’ve ever read as a comparison to Jesus:

“The Thing (unless it was a Person) went on beside him so very quietly that Shasta began to hope he had only imagined it. But just as he was becoming quite sure of it, there suddenly came a deep, rich sigh out of the darkness beside him… ‘Who are you?’ He said, scarcely above a whisper. ‘One who has waited long for you to speak,’ said the Thing. Its voice was not loud, but very large and deep…But after one glance at the Lions face he slipped out of the saddle and fell at its feet. He couldn’t say anything but then he didn’t want to say anything, and he knew he needn’t say anything. The High King above all kings stooped towards him. Its mane, and some strange and solemn perfume that hung about the mane, was all round him… Then instantly the pale brightness of the mist and the fiery brightness of the Lion rolled themselves together in a swirling glory and gathered themselves up and disappeared”
